Today is the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, as declared by Pope Francis.

In his letter released in August, Pope Francis said the annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation would give individuals and communities the chance “to reaffirm their personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care, and to implore his help for the protection of creation as well as his pardon for the sins committed against the world in which we live.”

“As Christians we wish to contribute to resolving the ecological crisis which humanity is presently experiencing,” Pope Francis said.

“In doing so, we must first rediscover in our own rich spiritual patrimony the deepest motivations for our concern for the care of creation.”

Pope Francis called for ecumenical collaboration to make the day a common and important journey for all Christians and for people everywhere to pray during the day for the care of creation.

A prayer for our Earth published in Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ encyclical is one prayer suggested for the day.

The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace has also encouraged parishioners to organise a prayer meeting in their own Church to celebrate the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, proposing a one-hour-Eucharistic Adoration for this purpose.
