Student’s ‘shine’ as they share their gifts

Sharing your God-given gifts was the focus of a Shine gathering, held recently in Launceston.

Organised by Catholic Youth Ministry as part of the Catholic Schools’ Youth Ministry Australia (CSYMA) program, the event was attended by 50 students from grades nine to 12, from Catholic schools throughout the State.

Director of Catholic Youth Ministry in Tasmania Rachelle Smith, said this was the first Shine gathering in Tasmania and she hoped to see it become an annual event.
The day was also attended by members of the CSYMA national team.

Music ministry was provided by Melbourne-based Catholic singer-songwriter Genevieve Bryant, who was also part of the Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF) 2013 and was recently announced as the winner of the official song competition for the ACYF 2015, which will be held in Adelaide in December.

Students also enjoyed a variety of workshops and finished the day with Mass at St Ailbe’s Hall, celebrated by Fr Richard Ross who was also part of the workshop program.

“The most important aspect about a gathering like this is the opportunity for students to be supported in their faith by coming together with like-minded students,” Miss Smith said.

“It is a chance to make a connection with something bigger than themselves, and greater than outside of their individual school experience.

“In particular with this theme, we hope that they took away a sense of their own giftedness, and a desire to share their God-given gifts and passions with the world.”

The next major event for Catholic Youth Ministry is the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Adelaide from December 3 to 5. Registrations close on October 14. For more information contact or telephone 0400 045 368.
