Stitch International Art Project

Centacare in New Town hosts a Life Skills Program with new arrivals to Australia. Stitch is often invited to work in collaboration with community development projects where the women are invited to participate with the greater community to create many artistic products and this crafty group was selected to join an Art Project on the theme of home by Lucy Bleach, lecturer at the Tasmanian Art School. The project also involved singer Rebekah Del Rio from Los Angeles and Hobart costume designer Ros Wren.

During the first week, Lucy accepted donations of used clothing in a lane off Criterion Street in the city; in the second week these clothes were sewn into a cloak by Ros and the Stitch ladies and in week three, Rebekah dressed in the cloak and sang in the lane.

On Friday October 7, Rebekah came to Stitch and sang for them before enjoying lunch with the ladies. She sang Llorando – a Spanish version of Roy Orbison’s Crying; sang We shall overcome in Farsi and other songs in Arabic and various languages of the ladies present. Rebekah sang Llorando in the film Mulholland Drive. Her website is where you can sample her powerful and expressive voice.
