Scripture fundamental to Catholic life

Understanding scripture was the basis of an event organised by the Verbum Domini Biblical and Catechetical institute, held at St Mary’s Cathedral recently.

The event, hosted by Dr Christine Wood and entitled, “The Significance of Dei Verbum for Us Today,” explored the Catholic understanding of scripture and of God’s divine revelation.

For Dr Wood, who spoke at the gathering of close to 30 parishioners, such catechetical events in the Archdiocese of Hobart are crucial for members of the community.

“Dei verbum is important for us today because it unpacks the riches of the Christian message of salvation – a message which quenches the thirst of the human heart.”

Archbishop Julian, who also spoke at the event, explained the centrality of Dei Verbum as a defining force in Catholic life.

“The 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the Dogmatic Constitution, Dei Verbum, is an opportunity to appreciate what a great contribution this document has been to the life of Catholics, and inspire us afresh to listen attentively to the Word of God.”

The deep connection between scripture and life as a Catholic is felt keenly by Dr Wood, who is also Director of the Office of Evangelisation for the Archdiocese of Hobart.

“My journey in theology began when I was a teenager and a university undergraduate,” Dr Wood said.

“Providentially, I stumbled upon some recordings of lectures by top biblical theologians who opened the Scriptures to me in such a way that the Word of God came alive.”

Dr Wood feels that all Catholics can benefit from the exploration of scripture that the Verbum Domini Biblical and Catechetical Insititute provides.

“The Gospel of Christ answered the deepest yearning of my heart. This began a life long journey of discovering the riches of divine Revelation in the Catholic Church.”

Dr Christine Wood also offered a two day course entitled, “The Gospel through the eyes of St Mark,” on Sat Nov 28- Sun Nov 29 at the Archdiocesan centre at Tower Rd, New Town.
