New Mission Evenings planned for this year

A state-wide mission initiative which saw parishes from the Huon Valley to St Helen’s take part in Eucharistic adoration, preaching, testimonies and music throughout 2018 will be run again in the coming year.

The parish-focused ‘Mission Evenings’ saw Archbishop Julian travel to each parish in Tasmania last year to run single-evening mission nights for local parishioners.

His Grace said that the Mission Evenings were a chance for people to come to something different to their normal experience and that it was an opportunity to find themselves drawn more deeply into their faith.

“I think that people were really caught up in the spiritual atmosphere that was created during the Mission Evenings,” he said.

“I think it touched chords deep in the hearts of many people, of their desire to be closer to God.”

After an encouraging response by the faithful, Archbishop Julian intends to run the initiative again in 2019, with a slightly different format and a new theme.

“It won’t just be a repeat, but I’m also hoping that those who came this year and found they benefited a lot from it will encourage neighbours, friends and family members to come along as well,” His Grace said.

The Mission Evenings last year followed a simple format of music, followed by a personal faith testimony, and then preaching by Archbishop Julian. This was then followed by a time of Eucharistic adoration with the opportunity to receive a prayer of blessing from the archbishop, as well as the opportunity to attend the Sacrament of Confession, often with the local parish priest.

Archbishop Julian noted that the opportunity to receive prayer meant a lot to many of those who attended.
“I prayed just a simple prayer of blessing over people, but a number of people commented that they found that very, very moving,” he said.

“I found that quite a humbling experience: all the people coming up and desiring prayer.”

Last year’s theme was Christ, Our Hope and Our Joy, while this year’s Mission Evenings will be titled No Greater Love, focusing on the love of Christ revealed through his crucifixion.
