Called to serve in ‘the heart of everything’

Fr Fidelis Udousoro has recently been appointed to the positions of Master of Ceremonies to Archbishop Julian, the Archdiocese’s Coordinator of Liturgy and as assistant priest to the Cathedral Parish.

Originally from Nigeria, Fr Udousoro was ordained to the priesthood at St Mary’s Cathedral in 2018.

He says his new appointments, which commenced on May 11, give him “a sense of coming home”.

“Because, that’s where it all started, that’s where I [was] ordained – I’ve always had this special relationship with the cathedral,” Fr Udousoro said.

The duties of Master of Ceremonies and Liturgy Coordinator involves assisting the Archbishop at public Masses such as Confirmations and Ordinations and communicating with parishes and schools in the preparation stages of liturgies.

Fr Udousoro spoke positively about his new roles involving the coordination of liturgical occasions, saying Catholic liturgy is at the heart of the priesthood.

“Liturgy is the heart of everything. It's the heart of what we do, what we say, what we teach to the people.”

He has also been appointed as chaplain to the Hobart campus of Guilford Young College.

Fr Udousoro has spent the past 15 months as assistant priest at Bellerive-Lindisfarne Parish. He says he thanks God “for the privilege to serve in that capacity”.

The priestly call to service was prominent in his thoughts as he took up his new duties.

“It’s a call to serve and I just trust that it’s God will for me at this stage of my life,” he said.
