Archbishop Porteous visits Huon
Archbishop meeting parishioners at Ranelagh

Last weekend the Catholic community of the Huon Valley Parish welcomed the new Archbishop, Julian Porteous, on his first pastoral visit. While he was in the Valley he celebrated Mass at Cygnet on Saturday evening and at Ranelagh on Sunday Morning. Both Masses were well attended.

Since arriving in Tasmania, the Archbishop has been extremely busy with the reins of office and this was the first chance for a purely pastoral visit to any Parish. What a beautiful part of Tasmania to begin with!

After Mass at Cygnet he enjoyed local hospitality with a dinner at a parishioner’s home, whilst at Ranelagh he had the opportunity to meet and talk with parishioners in the sunshine where a marquee had been set up as a shelter to provide morning tea. The Archbishop also had the opportunity to tour the building site of the new church that is being built at Ranelagh.

Parishioners on both side of the river enjoyed meeting and chatting with Archbishop after both Masses. This is bound to be the first visit of many for the Archbishop as he begins his episcopate in this lovely island.
