American Catholic preacher speaks in Hobart

For Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers, an American Catholic evangelist and preacher, Christ is the centre of a successful married life, modelled on the example of the Holy family.

“The Holy family is the model for family life,” he said.

“Even though they raised God, they weren’t spared the hardships of family life, and neither are we.”

Deacon Burke-Sivers talked of the importance of faithfulness to church teachings for married couples, when he spoke to Hobart audiences recently.

Known as the Dynamic Deacon for his energetic presentations, Deacon Burke-Sivers was the first baptised Catholic in his family and the first to finish college.

After finishing college, he joined the monastery to study to be a priest, but soon had to leave due to family circumstances.

“My parents divorced, my mum had a massive heart attack and died, so I had to leave to take care of my sister,” Deacon Burke-Sivers said.

While he still felt a strong call to religious life, attending a wedding and meeting the women who was to become his wife led Deacon Burke-Sivers in a different religious direction - to life as a deacon.

A deacon for the past 13 years, he emphasises the importance of the Eucharist and Eucharistic adoration, to a strong marriage.

“Families need the grace of the sacrament of marriage to get through life’s challenges,” he said.

“The Eucharist is Jesus Christ, and the grace of that sacrament strengthens the marriage.”
