Professional Standards

The Professional Standards Office (PSO) for the Archdiocese of Hobart (AOH) through its Director of Professional Standards (DPS) advises and assists in all professional standards matters including responses to notifications of sexual abuse and other complaints received in respect of clergy, church workers and volunteers.

The PSO is also responsible for the review and development of policies and procedures that are aimed at ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all children and adults who engage with the Catholic Church in Tasmania in line with the National Catholic Safeguarding Standards.

The DPS works with multiple agencies and teams within the AOH including Safe Communities, Risk & Governance, CatholicCare Tasmania and Catholic Education Tasmania to deliver valuable training and resources and to ensure that an effective state-wide response is developed and delivered in a timely and pastorally supportive manner.

Vos Estis Lux Mundi

In 2019, Pope Francis established a new procedure, Vos estis lux mundi (‘You are the light of the world’), to combat sexual abuse and to ensure that bishops and religious superiors are held accountable for their actions.

The procedure is designed to facilitate reports from clergy, religious and lay Church personnel in regards to crimes of sexual abuse committed by clergy and religious, and the concealing of crimes of sexual abuse by Bishops and their equivalents.
