The Office of Church Life and Mission, originally called The Pastoral Planning and Formation Centre was established in 1993, following the conclusion of the parish renewal process, titled Renew. The principal functions of the centre have been to:

  • Provide direction and support for parishes
  • Provide access to resources
  • Initiate and oversee pastoral planning on a Diocesan level and
  • Provide opportunities for adult faith formation.

The development of both an understanding of and practical skills in collaborative ministry has been central to the work of the pastoral planning and formation staff. This focus has taken practical shape through the provision of seminars on collaborative ministry and ongoing support in the implementation of collaborative processes throughout the Archdiocese.

Among the many activities to emanate from the Centre is the Diploma of Pastoral Ministry, a three year part time course, providing participants with a comprehensive introduction to pastoral ministry, including units in Theology, Scripture, Liturgy, and Spirituality.

The Office of Church Life and Mission staff also support parish development through the provision of:

  • formation for Pastoral Councils;
  • facilitation of parish assemblies and other parish meetings;
  • sessions on collaborative ministry; and
  • reflection days.

Following the Call to Change initiative (1999 - 2001) The Office of Church Life and Mission Centre was expanded to include resource people working in the areas of RCIA; Neighbourhood Church Community development; and Regional Adult Faith Formation.

The people responsible for the above ministries and others, have formed a Diocesan Parish Support Team whose specific aims are as follows:

  • to foster a renewed understanding of evangelisation at the parish level;
  • to help parishes integrate young people and young families into the ongoing life of the Church; and
  • to support the development of lifelong catechesis within the parish context.
