The Archbishop of Hobart Archbishop Adrian Doyle has determined that rural communities in Tasmania require readiness to celebrate Sunday Celebrations of the Word and Communion. The need may arise when their pastors may be absent for short periods and are unable to obtain a supply priest or as the result of an emergency situation.
Sunday Celebrations of the Word are not the same as celebrations of the Mass. It is important, however, that communities that have no opportunity for Sunday Mass are able to gather to hear the Word of God and celebrate the holy character of Sunday, the Lord's Day.
Communities discern appropriate leaders who undertake a specific formation program facilitated by the Liturgy Office and the Office of Church Life and Mission. These men and women are each provided with the Lay Leaders' Manual which has been produced specifically for the Archdiocese of Hobart. Upon completion of their formation, lay liturgical leaders' names are submitted to the Archbishop. The leaders are commissioned by their local parish community.
Rites for the Archdiocese of Hobart
Rites for Sunday Celebrations of the Word and Communion have been developed for the Archdiocese in line with national guidelines and Church norms:
- Sunday Celebrations of the Word and Communion: Rite for Advent
- Sunday Celebrations of the Word and Communion: Rite for Christmas
- Sunday Celebrations of the Word and Communion: Rite for Lent
- Sunday Celebrations of the Word and Communion: Rite for Easter
- Sunday Celebrations of the Word and Communion: Rite for Ordinary Time
Rites for emergencies have also been prepared (Sunday Celebrations of the Word).
